SPEAKING

Lee Fields, Speaker

Much of what divides us isn't disagreement. It's distortion.

Lee speaks on instinctual bias, clear thinking, and perspective-taking: how people come to notice different things first, and what it takes to see past their own lens. Her talks are practical, a little funny, and built to change how two people meet on Monday.

That's not how I remember it, but let's talk about it.

We each see the world through one of three instinctual biases. Learning to spot that lens is a critical-thinking skill, and it makes compassion and connection possible.

Two people talk past each other, each certain the other isn’t listening. Often they don’t disagree at all. They’re paying attention to different things. Knowing your pattern isn’t enough, because thinking errors protect it, so the talk pairs the model with a few clear-thinking habits.

THE AUDIENCE LEAVES WITH

  • A simple model of three instinctual biases: Preserving, Navigating, and Transmitting

  • A way to tell a different instinct from a character flaw

  • Three clear-thinking habits that keep awareness from becoming a label

  • A one-week experiment for one stuck relationship

The talk draws on the instinctual biases model developed by Mario Sikora of Awareness to Action International, and on research into confirmation bias, implicit bias, and cognitive dissonance.

Fingerprints in the Clay

A MODERN HISTORY OF THE ENNEAGRAM · TALK OR SESSION

A modern history of the Enneagram, from Naranjo’s early groups and the Jesuit lineage to the major schools teaching today. Drawn from Lee’s interviews with founders and leading teachers, it traces how each lineage shaped the model, including the assumptions and blind spots each one brought. The Enneagram is a construct built by many people. When you know who threw the pots, you can begin to recognize their fingerprints in the clay. That isn’t bad in itself, but bias left unacknowledged muddies the water.

*It’s pronounced “deh-muhss-THEE-nee-uhn.”

Lee Fields teaches people to see themselves and each other more clearly. She is faculty with Awareness to Action International, co-hosts the podcast Thinking Well & Why with Mario Sikora and Seth Creekmore (her partner in Analogue Enneagram), and is co-authoring a forthcoming book on the instinctual biases with Mario Sikora and María José Muñita. She is also writing her own book, Fields’ Guide to Inner Work. Through the seasons, she tends a creative online community with Stephanie Spencer. She serves as Vice President and Programming Chair of the IEA Southeast USA Board. Her speaking roots are in Athens, where she was President of the Demosthenian* Society at the University of Georgia and learned to argue in good faith and take the other side seriously. Her working philosophy: be kind to people and ruthless with ideas. She is a former recipe tester with a 27-step deviled egg. But that’s a whole other talk.
